Photoshop CS3, Photoshop Elements and Fireworks 8 are great applications to create impressive images, backgrounds, and menus.

Efficiency is crucial when using digital imaging for a web sites. Time/ money is important when creating 24 buttons, or 60 thumbnail images. Images have to look clean but also should load fast.

One very important issue is the download time. Large pictures could take more then 10 seconds to download (56kbps modem). Professional compression to JPEG files and GIF for logos (max 256 colors) is required.

As the full version of Photoshop is $600 - $700, I do suggest Photoshop Elements ($79) for beginners. Photoshop Elements is easier for beginners and has enough stuff to figure out before you really need the full version. For Ecommerce I suggest Photoshop Elements.

Photoshop CS 2 Update (June 2006)
The new Photoshop CS 2 update (version 9.0.1) fixes a number of relatively small bug fixes that were discovered after CS 2 shipped. You can download it for free from Adobe's website.
